Close to 2,780 students enrolled in primary and secondary schools throughout Seoul are from multicultural families. Seoul City says as of the end of last year there were 2,774 students with multicultural backgrounds.
Among them more than 1,000 had ethnic Japanese parents and about 600 had ethnic Chinese parents. City officials say plans are in the works to expand the number of elementary schools offering Korean language classes for these students to 16 by 2010.
Also, specialized high schools in Seoul are to apply new admission rules designed to give advantages to students from multicultural backgrounds.
