Acid colors are in trend this spring. Colorful skinny jeans are popular thanks to idol group Girls' Generation, and colorful shoes in hot pink and cobalt colors are also much sought-after. But buyers beware, acid colors can easily look vulgar.
Fashion gurus recommend complementing them with plenty of grey to avoid looking like a plastic toy.
A person at the Samsung Fashion Institute said, "Grey is like a quiet and calm friend. It mediates the collision of strong colors." The golden rule in fashion is to match achromatic colors with strong colors to tone them down. But black and white are less suitable, because they make strong statements themselves. Black makes the acid colors stand out even more, and white is too bright. Grey, however, mildly tones down the acid colors, and can look sophisticated with acid pink, blue and yellow.
The most important thing to consider when wearing acid colors with grey is the proportion. According to a stylist who has worked for actress Kim Tae-hee and pop star Lee Hyo-ri, "It looks awkward when you give the same proportion to grey and acid color. Either you allot less than 30 percent to grey to emphasize grey, or put an emphasis on the acid color by increasing the proportion of grey over half."
