Kim Jong-il 'Likely to Hand Power Over to Son'

    February 26, 2009 09:26

South Korean intelligence forces believe it is likely that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il will hand over power to his son, ensuring a third generation of Kims at the head of the Stalinist autocracy. The National Intelligence Service gave the assessment in a report presented to the National Assembly Intelligence Committee.

But NIS director Won Sei-hoon was quoted by Grand National Party lawmaker Lee Cheol-woo and Democratic Party lawmaker Park Young-sun as saying the next North Korean leader would probably have only tenuous control.

The NIS added press reports that Kim has already chosen his third son Jong-un as his successor are "unfounded."
