King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of the Chosun Dynasty, will appear in Gwanghwamun Plaza in a seated position. The plaza will be completed in July but the statue is expected early next year.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Sunday said an advisory committee decided to build a sedentary statue of the king.

Some committee members apparently wanted a standing figure to match the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin already in the plaza. But the committee decided the statues would be far enough apart for any difference in height to make little difference and felt a seated position would be more appropriate for a king.

The city added it decided to take its time about the statue since it is by now impossible to complete in time with the plaza.

The sculptor will be chosen in a public competition among five or six artists selected based on recommendations from major organizations such as the Korean Fine Arts Association and universities.
