The Uijeongbu District Court on Wednesday sentenced actress Ok So-ri to eight months in prison and two years probation for adultery. Her lover, a singer identified as Jung, was sentenced to six months in prison and two years probation.

“Although adultery with an acquaintance of the husband’s is to be condemned, the accuser cannot escape criticism that he was not a committed husband.” The court said it took into account that the accused has had to “endure tremendous mental distress as her status as a celebrity led to her private life being divulged to the public in every detail.”

Prosecutors had sought 18 months in prison for Ok and six months in jail and two years in probation for Jung on Nov. 26. Ok was indicted for having extramarital relations on three occasions with Jung from May to July 2006. The trial was postponed for nine months as Ok filed a petition to the Constitutional Court in February against the elderly adultery law, but the court failed to overturn it for want of the requisite two-thirds majority.

Ok and her husband Park Chul, also a star, have filed for divorce.
