California Drops Divisive Korea Book from Curriculum

The semi-autobiographical book "So Far From the Bamboo Grove" by Japanese-American author Yoko Kawashima Watkins has been dropped from the school curriculum in the state due to historical inaccuracies.

The Korean School Association of Northern California says they are thrilled with the decision and are pleased that children will no longer be taught distorted history.

The controversial children's novel centers around an 11-year-old Japanese girl's escape from Korea near the end of Japan's colonial rule, largely portraying the Japanese protagonists as victims.

Already banned in a number of countries including China, this is the first time a state government has ruled to exclude the book from a list of recommended literature for grades six through eight.
