A woman has been arrested in Indianapolis on charges of killing her adopted Korean daughter. Rebecca Kyrie appeared in Hamilton Superior Court in Noblesville to face charges of murder, battery resulting in death, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and aggravated battery, press reports said.
The charges stem from the Sept. 4 death of Hei Min Chung, a 13-month-old girl adopted by Kyrie and her husband, David. The case comes amid an international outcry sparked by a Dutch diplomatic couple's allegedly dumping of their adopted Korean daughter in Hong Kong.
Kyrie and her husband, who have two biological sons, decided to adopt a child six months ago and adopted Chung from Korea through Bethany Christian Services. Police say Kyrie shook the girl so violently that the baby suffered fatal brain injuries.
According to the authorities, the woman called 911 on Sept. 3 and reported the child was frothing at the mouth. The baby was taken to hospital, diagnosed with a severe brain injury and placed on life support but died the next day, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The results of an autopsy show the adoptee died from "blunt cranio-cerebral injuries" associated with shaken baby syndrome. Kyrie was arrested on Thursday and is being held without bond in the Hamilton County Jail.
