The family of Kim Kyung-joon on Wednesday abruptly canceled a Los Angeles press conference called to refute Korean prosecutors after he was indicted in the BBK investment scam.

The family put up a cancellation notice in front of the Wilshire Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles at 9:40 a.m., 80 minutes before it was supposed to begin. They had earlier vowed to disprove the findings of Korean prosecutors, which cleared Grand National Party presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak of any involvement in the scandal.

Kim's sister Erica Kim posted a notice canceling a press conference at her office at a similar time. Written in the name of Kim's family, it merely apologized for canceling but offered no explanation. Erica Kim, a former lawyer, had promised to produce more evidence and documents at the press conference contradicting the findings. She denounced the investigation results for proving that there was no equality before the law in Korea and claimed she had "seen it coming."

Prosecutors decided to ask U.S. authorities to extradite Erica Kim to charge her with complicity with her brother in establishing bogus companies and transferring huge amounts of money to overseas bank accounts. They also plan to question Kim's wife Lee Bo-ra as soon as she returns to Korea on suspicion that she had a direct part in the boiler room scam and management of BBK. Kim's family were unavailable for comment.
