The United Nations World Food Programme is raising the alarm over the situation in North Korea following last week's downpours.

Paul Lysley, spokesperson for the WFP Asia, has estimated the damage to crops alone at 450,000 tons.

North Korea's Damage Research Organization says 11 percent of the country's farming grounds have been lost.

The recent floods following the rain are believed to have affected some 300,000 North Koreans.

After a visit to the damaged sites, UN officials have confirmed the urgency for food, medication and safety facilities.
