Korea's Best-Paid Entertainers? It's the Comedians

Korean entertainers who work as comedians-MCs (master of ceremonies) are paid more than three times what singers and actors make, a study has found. The study was conducted by former comedian Cho Yong-jun as his Master's thesis for the Economics Dept. of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Cho's figures were based on the yearly salaries paid to entertainers by the state-run Korean Broadcasting System from Nov. 2005 to June 2006.

According to the essay, "Mr. A", an MC and ex-comedian, was the top-paid entertainer, with W757.15 million (US$1=W933) that year. The second largest salary was W465 million and the third W453 million.

In contrast, the best-paid actor received a salary of W361.35 million, an amount similar to that received by the number-five comedian-MC at W361.20 million. For singers, the largest salary was W244.95 million, just a third of the top performance fee for comedian-MCs.
