Third Time Lucky for Maya Fans

Singer Maya has created a bold new image for herself that rings out through her third album. Take a look at the cover and her new image is clear -- in sleeveless shirt she reveals her thigh for a group of topless men. Turn the CD over and she’s exposing her entire back, with the gang of guys this time wearing just underwear. A marked contrast from her former trademark of riding breeches, the popular singer is clearly emphasizing her femininity for the new album. “I don’t usually wear revealing clothes, but I wanted to show a different, feminine side to myself this time. I had a tough time posing for cameras with these clothes on though,” she said with a big smile.

    Thoughtful Songs

The new album is called “Road to myself” and is in many ways a journey of self-discovery for the popular singer, particularly in the song “The Road,” which she wrote herself. Another song, the acoustic ballad “Strong Liquor,” expresses the pain felt when parting with a lover and is compared to the bitter taste of strong liquor and illustrates the strength and thoughtfulness of her work today. The new album casts aside former imagery of a tough rocker and instead highlights a newfound maturity and her progress made over the years.

    Broadening Her Horizons

Wherever she goes, a coordinator, a manager and a Chinese teacher accompany Maya. She’s been studying Chinese now for two years and reached a level where she can communicate effectively in day-to-day situations. She often chats with her teacher between performances, which helps enormously in her preparations to work in China. Opportunities have arisen to promote herself overseas in the recent past, but she has refused each time, waiting to master the new language of a country before tapping into it commercially. She feels that now is the time however and is planning to release an album in China next year and also promote herself in Japan. In support of the plan, the Japanese broadcaster NHK is filming a documentary about Maya’s daily life in Korea to coincide with her launch in Japan.

As the world spotlight turns on Maya, one further wish she has is to become a better musician.
