Monsoon to Drench Korea From Wednesday

The rainy season starts Wednesday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Tuesday. Rain is expected for the next four days, signaling the start of a long and boring stretch of wet weather that will continue for about a month. Nationwide rain on Saturday morning, when Team Korea plays Switzerland, is expected to dampen Korean supporters' enthusiasm for cheering their team in the streets.

The central region will be the first to experience the summer monsoon under the influence of a low pressure system stretching out eastward from northern China on Wednesday, the KMA said. The downpour will drench the central region from Wednesday morning and the southern region from late Wednesday afternoon. Precipitation will be some 10-30 mm in the central region and 5-10 mm in the south.

It will stop raining on Thursday but start again from Friday for the next two days in the central region, while the south is expected to see wet weather on and off until June 24. Midday temperatures are forecast to be 3-5 degrees Celsius lower than early this week at between 21 and 28 degrees.

Downpour will soak the whole nation from Friday night till Saturday morning, when Korea plays Switzerland in the football World Cup. Typically, heavy rains are expected at the beginning and end of the rainy season, the KMA said, and called for thorough preparations to prevent water damage.

The summer monsoon is distinct especially in Korea, China and Japan and has its positive effects. It helps the three nations cope with spring droughts and clears up pollutants which hang in the atmosphere. The rise of the North Pacific anticyclone, which occurs with the rainy season, keeps sandstorms from the peninsula. Persistent wet weather, however, can cause skin disease, infectious diseases and depression.
