True to the peripatetic life of the pioneer video artist Paik Nam-june, his ashes will be buried in several countries that were important for the Korean-born artist’s career, including the U.S., Korea, and Germany. Paik’s nephew, Ken Paik Hakuta, announced the funeral arrangements at a studio in SoHo, New York on Monday following Paik’s death a day earlier.
Local circumstances especially in Italy and Spain will determine how many countries will become Park’s last resting place. In the U.S., the ashes will go to his studio in Manhattan, in Korea to the Paik Nam-june Museum now under construction in Gyeonggi Province, and in Germany in a wing of the Guggenheim Art Museum in Berlin. The interment is scheduled for Feb. 3. Park’s family said there are plans for large-scale memorial services for the artist in February and March in Korea, the U.S. and Germany.
