Korea to Build Own Bullet Trains

A homegrown high-speed bullet train could undergo a test run by the end of 2007. A meeting of science and technology-related officials presided over by Science and Technology Minister Oh Myung on Thursday agreed to get the scheme on the road.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation will invest W80 billion(US$80 million) from September until December 2007 to build solely with domestic technologies two high-speed trains of 10 cars each capable of making 300 km/h. The trains will be used for the Jeolla Line of the Korea Train Express (KTX), which will open in 2008. The KTX currently operates French-made trains.
