The Seoul District Public Prosecutors’ Office arrested and indicted a 33-years-old man named Chun Thursday for violating the National Security Law by secretly crossing into North Korea and providing information about the military unit he served. Chun smuggled himself into Hoeryung, North Hamgyeong province, North Korea by crossing the Tumen River through Jilin province, China in early September. He is suspected of providing military information to North Korea like the location of the Air Force fighter wing he served and the location of anti-air batteries.
Investigations revealed that Chun, who made up his mind to go North out of feelings of victimization by society because his uncle had defected to the North, attempted to defect at the North Korean embassy in Nepal in August last year, but was turned down. Chun, who received a hearty welcome from North Korea on the first day of his entry such as a welcoming party, was handed over to China as he was regarded as an illegal entrant. China, after informing Seoul on Oct 21, deported Chun.
