World Cup Exhibition Opens

    Former national team coach Guus Hiddink attended the tape cutting ceremony at the opening of the World Cup photography exhibition "June, 2002, Republic of Korea" co-hosted by the Chosun Ilbo and SBS at the Seoul World Cup Stadium at 4:00pm Thursday. The exhibition is open to the public on Friday.

    After Hiddink attended a dinner party hosted by Chosun Ilbo President Bang Sang-hoon at the Koreana Hotel, Seoul, and the former head coach was reunited with some of the figures involved in the successful hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea Japan in two months.

    Participants at the luncheon included Korea Football Association Chairman Chung Mong-joon, the former KOWOC Co-chairman Lee Yeon-taek, former Prime Minister Lee Hong-gu, Korea Chamber Of Commerce and Industry (Korcham) Chairman Park Yong-seong, Samyang International Chairman Heo Gwang-su, singer Yoon Do-hyun, the team captain Hong Myeong-bo, Coca Cola Korea Manager Gert Broos, Nike Europe Executive Director Keith van Nubenhuisen, Idea Consulting President Diana Kang, PSV Eindhoven Vice-president Pons Sporen and vice president of the Chosun Ilbo Ahn Byeong-hoon.

    During lunch when the, participants delivered speeches of gratitude for the contribution Hiddink left for the country.

    President Bang said in an opening speech he really appreciate Hiddink for the dream and hope he gave the South Korean people, adding that the autobiography will be a book inspiring confidence in the tired people of South Korea. The Dutch man said in response, "Now South Korea has carved its name on the World Soccer map clearly," adding that he was impressed by the young in the Netherlands clad in red chanting the "Victory Korea" song.

    "Personally, I have learned how to organize and manage a group from Hiddink," Chung Mong-joon said, adding there were many books related to Hiddink at bookstores but 'My Way' was the only true autobiography.

    The former co-chairman of KOWOC Lee Yeon-taek said the confidence in Hiddink brought victory in reverse at the match against Italy, adding that Hiddink, whose adaptability is excellent.

    "Entrepreneurs should take close look at Hiddink strategy and tactics introduced in My Way," said KORCHAM Chairman Park Yong-seong, "also they have to model themselves after Hiddink who set up a long term strategy for stepping up basic stamina and precise tactics to decide the accurate time to replace a player." Samyang International Chairman Heo Gwang-su said he was impressed by the clear managing method of hiring a player according to ability-based principle without the connection in school or regionalism.

    Hong Myeong-bo, the former team captain said what he learned from the Dutch head coach was not soccer technology, but the wisdom to handle players, adding that he was impressed by the comfortableness with Hiddink who treated players like sons except during training. Upon meeting with Hong, Hiddink showed a deep interest in the captain's plan to go to the United States.

    Singer Yoon Do-hyeon of the world cup official song for rooters ‘Oh Certain Victory Korea’ met with Hiddink for the first time. "I’m really stunned by his leadership that breaks the ice with a light joke."

    Hiddink's friend Gert Broos, said, "his strong point is to motivate others. That was the exact driving engine for South Korea to make through the semi-finals."

    "Hiddink gave a South Korean society eager for true leadership a fresh shock," said the former prime minister Lee Hong-ku, adding "the reason South Korean people love him is because of this true leadership they saw from him."
