World Cup Fountain Starts Operating

The World Cup Fountain was inaugurated on the Han River, in front of the World Cup stadium, Sangam-dong, Seoul on Tuesday afternoon, displaying a 202m high water jet. The fountain is reported to be the highest in the world, overpowering the 79m-high Fountain Hill of Arizona and 140m high fountain in Lake Leman, Switzerland.

Equipped with a lighting system for nighttime viewing, the fountain will create a spectacular sight with its 202m-high main stream and 21 subsidiary streams following Hyundai Development Company finishing its W7.78 billion project after ten months of construction.

The fountain will operate three times a day, at 10:00am, 2:00pm, and 6:30pm for two hours each until November 11, and resume operation in April 2002 after the winter season. Seoul plans to relocate the fountain to Seonyudo Park, next to the World Cup Stadium, after next year’s international soccer event.
