Cholera Outbreak Victims Reach 80

    The National Health Institute confirmed Thursday that 11 more cholera patients were identified in Daegu city, which brought the total to 36 victims in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area in a single day.

    A patient suffering severe diarrhea in Gimpo city of Gyeonggi province was also reported as a cholera victim, bringing the total of reported cholera patients to 80 to date.

    Outside of the Daegu and Gyeongbuk area, five suspected cases in Gunsan Cheongju were found to be free of cholera.

    According to regional data, Youngcheon has had the most confirmed cases with 42, followed by Gyeongju 16 , Daegu 12 and Gyeongsan 4.

    In addition two cases have been reported in Youngdeuk and Seongju each and one case in both Ulju and Gimpo.

    To date, all cholera cases except one case in Ulju have eaten at a restaurant called 25-hour Meeting Square, the epicenter for the disease, said the Infectious Disease Prevention Authority.

    According to the authority, there are 600 more suspected cases of cholera under investigation and it foresees a large number of patients will be confirmed shortly.
