Hip-Hop Group Arrested on Drug Charges

      The members of a popular hip-hop group, Uptown were caught by police injecting illegal drugs including liquid philopon (methylamphetamine) with two female university students. Three Uptown members; Kim Sang-wook (age 21, American name; Steve Kim), Kim Young-jin (24, John Kim), Lee Hyun-soo (22, Carlos Calvin) and two women; Steve Kim's girlfriend, a 23-year-old university student identified only as Park, and a 24-year-old woman known only by her surname Cho were arrested by the Seoul District Prosecutor's Office on Sunday.

      The prosecutors decided to call in for questioning a former Uptown member, 22-year-old woman Yoon Mi-rae, who is currently a member of the group Tashani but who went into hiding after the incident, and J.K. (Korean name; Suh Jeong-kwon), one of the 2-member dance group Drunken Tiger for allowing his residence to be used by the five who took the drugs.

      According to the prosecutors, Steve Kim inhaled or injected philopon (methamphetamine), took ecstasy, and smoked cannabis several times with his girlfriend Park, group partner John Kim, and Yoon Mi-rae at his apartment in Mapo-ku, Seoul last December. University student Park was found to have injected drugs on 5 occasions, and inhaled philopon with Cho and Steve Kim at J.K's apartment in Tongsung-dong, Seoul last August.

      The prosecutors revealed that the members who are mostly 2nd-generation Korean-Americans started taking drugs when they lived in the United States and had tried various types of drugs at hotels or at their friends' homes.

      Uptown was formed in December 1998 and recently released their fourth album. The prosecutors are increasing the scope of their investigation to various movie actors who habitually took drugs, including a 23-year-old pornographic movie actress identified only as Park.
