Apple Opens 4th Korean Store as Market Share Soars

Koreans are gradually succumbing to the lure of Apple's slick, stylish phones and operating system that have taken the rest of the world by storm.Korea's smartphone market has been the stubborn stronghold of local rivals and their Android OS. And while Apple has already grabbed 60 percent of Japan's smartphone market and is hot on the heels of Vivo, OPPO and Xiaomi in China, its market share in Korea has traditionally been smaller.But it rose from 16.6 percent in 2019 to 24.4 percent in 2021, and LG's exit from the smartphone market last year helped expand Apple's presence even further, with market share jumping to 25.7 percent in the second quarter of this year.

Hundreds of people lined up as a new Apple store opened in Seoul's Jamsil last Saturday morning, its fourth in Korea. It had opened its third store in Myeong-dong just five months ago.Now the trendy Gangnam and Honik University areas beckon, and soon Apple could have more stores in Seoul than in Tokyo.
