U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on his re-election and used the opportunity to urge him to raise pressure on North Korea.
"Spoke to President Xi of China to congratulate him on his extraordinary elevation. Also discussed NoKo & trade, two very important subjects!" Trump tweeted.
The White House in a statement said Trump told Xi he is looking forward to visiting Beijing next month and hopes to see progress in joint efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. Xi said China will "unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development," according to Xinhua News.
In an interview with Fox television, Trump boasted his first trip to Asia next month will be a "historic and positive experience." He reiterated that the North Korean nuclear threat is a "very big problem."
Meanwhile, Radio Free Asia reported that 16 U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to State Secretary Rex Tillerson urging him to designate North Korea as a terrorism-sponsoring state again.
