Korea's oldest nuclear reactor was shut down permanently on Sunday after 40 years in operation.

In line with President Moon Jae-in's pledge to gradually close down all aged nuclear power reactors and coal-fired power plants, the government opted against extending the life span of the reactor in Busan one more time.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power said the plant was in a cooling phase after being disconnected from the power grid on Saturday.

The reactor started commercial operations in 1978 with a life span of 30 years, extended by 10 years in 2007.
