Nearly half of all adult men are overweight as is one in four women, according to the National Health Insurance Service and the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity.
As of last year, 40.7 percent of men and 24.5 percent of women were overweight. The rate of obesity for both sexes has risen to 4.8 percent.
Bigger waists have become an issue of concern, especially with a rise in obesity-linked diseases like diabetes. Studies have found that obesity raises the mortality rate of serious diseases by 20 percent.
