Seven out of 10 pre-college students in Korea own a smartphone, according to recent figures provided by the government.

The Ministry of Education carried out a survey on 6.28 million students in 11,410 primary and secondary schools nationwide from June 28 to July 8 and found that 434,734, or 70 percent, carry a smartphone. The ownership rate for elementary school students alone was 50 percent.

The penetration rate proved highest among middle school students at 85.1 percent. The rate was 83.7 percent among high school students, and 48.8 percent among primary school students.

"It seems that most pupils in the upper years of elementary school, as well as those in middle school, own a smartphone as they are so important in helping kids keep up with their social circle nowadays," said Park Sung-soo, director of the ministry's student welfare policy division.

Rural areas were hardly far behind towns and cities in terms of smartphone penetration among students, with respective rates of 66.5 percent and 69.6 percent.
