Thousands of Schoolyard Crimes Reported Every Year

Nearly 14,000 robberies, murders and other serious crimes took place in schools in the last three years.

According to statistics by the National Police Agency submitted to lawmaker Kim Tae-won, there were 13,703 serious crimes in school grounds from 2010 until August this year. The crimes were committed not only by students and teachers but also outsiders.

Robbery was the most common crime with 6,672 cases, or 48.7 percent. Assault was a close second with 6,568 or 47.9 percent. Sexual offence such as rape and indecent assault took up 2.8 percent with 390, and there were 55 muggings or 0.4 percent.

There were also 12 murder, making up 0.1 percent of schoolyard crime.

Schoolyard crime peaked in 2010, when 6,094 cases were reported. The following year saw a drop of around 1,700, and 3,275 cases were reported in the first eight months of this year. At this pace, the number is expected to be higher than last year’s at 4,900.

"We urgently need to come up with measures to protect schools from violent crime," Kim said.
