Comatose Samsung Chairman Charged with Tax Evasion
Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee has been charged with evading around US$8 million worth of capital gains and real estate taxes.
The richest man in Korea is suspected of evading taxes by hiding nearly $400 million in 260 accounts created under borrowed names. The agency said these are believed to have been active since the 1990s.
Police are unable to question Lee as he has been in a coma since a heart attack in 2014, and will ask prosecutors to suspend what could be the last indictment of a life dogged by a long string of criminal convictions.
The revelation comes just days after his son and heir Lee Jae-yong was freed from jail with a suspended sentence for bribery.
