China to Send Politburo Bigwig to Pyeongchang Olympics
The Chinese government is expected to send Han Zheng, the seventh-highest-ranking Communist Party official, to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, according to diplomatic sources on Tuesday.
A former Shanghai mayor and Communist Party secretary general, Han was selected as one of seven members of the politburo at a party convention last October.
Han was an aide to Chinese President Xi Jinping when Xi was party secretary in Shanghai.
That means there is little chance of Xi himself turning up, though the government here still hopes he may come to the closing ceremony.
China is set to host the Winter Olympics in 2022, and Xi attended the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
