Fourteen out of every 100 Koreans use their smartphones so much that they have trouble going about their daily routines and are at risk of addiction, a study claims.

The joint study by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Information Society Agency shows that 14.2 percent of smartphone users were at risk of addiction last year, up from 11.8 percent in 2013.

The increase is attributed to a rise in the number of people who turn to smartphones from their PCs, and the number of people at risk of computer addiction fell apace from 14.6 percent in 2004 to 6.9 percent last year.

Youngsters between 10 and 19 are particularly vulnerable to smartphone addiction with some 30 percent at risk.

The most frequently used services on smartphones were mobile messengers, news search and games.
