Dokdo to Witness 1st Sunrise of 2014
Korea's first sunrise of the new year is expected to come into view at 7:26.23 a.m. over the islets of Dokdo.
The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute announced on Tuesday that the sun will first rise over Dokdo, and will be visible from the mainland five minutes later, starting with Ganjeolgot Cape and Bangeojin in Ulsan, at 7:31 a.m.
Those waiting to see the sunrise at Mt. Namsan in Seoul will have to wait until 7:46 a.m., but it will appear earlier at 7:31 a.m. in Taejongdae and Haeundae in Busan.
Jeongdongjin Beach, a popular spot to catch the sunrise near Gangneung in Gangwon Province, will welcome it at 7:38 a.m., two minutes after those watching from Seongsan Sunrise Peak in Jeju Island.
It appears earlier in Jeju than Gangneung, which is further east, because the sun rises from the southeast in winter. The times were all calculated based on the assumption that people observing the sunrise will be standing at sea level. As such, moving to higher altitudes could result in slightly earlier viewings.
