Fugitive's Female Friends
"[Shin Chang-won] continuously said that he loved me and that he would carry me on his back when we would go outside. He also said that he would cook for me while referring to cookbooks. He said that he would not regret it even were he to get arrested right before my eyes."
Such were the sympathetic phrases included in the police interrogation of a 26-year-old woman identified by her surname Kim, Shin's most recent girlfriend who lived with the fugitive, giving him a safe place to hide from the police.
There were 14 other women beside Kim who fell for Shin and allowed him to hide from the law for over two and a half years. They will also be faced with a prison term of up to 3 years or a maximum W5 million fine for aiding and abetting a criminal to hide.
Shin apparently won the women's hearts by saying that he wanted them to have his child. A woman identified by her surname Kang aborted Shin's child last summer after he narrowly escaped from patrol police in Seoul.
These ex-girlfriends of Korea's formally most wanted fugitive have already had interviews with some Korean media companies and apparently publically asked after Shin's well being.
