'The Castles of Korea Preserving 5000 Years of History' by photographer Choi Jin-youn

Starting his career as a photo journalist for a monthly in 1980, Choi worked at Korea Life before joining the current News Times and running his own photo studio in Seoul. Choi's "Roots" was awarded the grand prize in the 1987 Korea Photo Contest. Having collected some 30,000 photographs of castle nationwide on video and film over the last 20 years, he has been recording a documentary about the scenes of disappearing historical things, including beacon mounds, old bridges, royal tombs, ancient ice storehouses called 'Seokbinggo' and the religious sculpture 'Namgeunseok' in Jeonbuk province.

With the theme of old castles of ancient Korea, he staged four series of photo exhibitions to introduce national defense heritage from the country's ancestors. His photo exhibition, 'A Day in the Life of Female Soldiers' held in Tokyo last June made headline news in the Asahi Shinmun.

This exhibition was also part of the Chosun Ilbo' commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Korean War in June of 2000. He has held seven solo exhibitions and displayed his works at 30 exhibitions so far and is currently publishing photo-essays each month.

His photo books include 'Impressions of America,' 'Castles of Korea,' 'Traditional Scientific Construction' and 'A Day in the Life of Female Soldiers.'
