National Parks of Korea - Autumn on Mount Baekdu
"The startling beauty of Mount Baekdu with colored autumn leaves awes its visitors"
Koreans consider Mount Baekdu as a sacred mountain, one of the three ¡°spirited¡± mountains; the one contained in the legendary foundation of Korea. From the beginning of history through the Three Kingdoms period, to the Goryeo and Chosun Dynasties, Koreans have spiritually depended upon the ¡°divine¡± mountain.
Called Changbai by the Chinese, Mount Baekdu has a lake on its top. With ice-cold water and mysterious colors, Chunji, or Heaven¡¯s Lake, is a remainder of the mountain¡¯s volcanic nature and is home to an ancient ecosystem. Mount Baekdu has been designated as a ¡®Nature Conservation District¡¯ and International Ecological Preservation Site.
The highest mountain on Korean peninsula at 2,750m, Mount Baekdu is located on its the northern border, adjacent to Jilin Province, China, at latitude 42.7 degrees north and longitude 128.5 degree east. Its total area is about 8,000km, nearly the size of North Jeolla Province. Continuous peaks over 2,000m are Daeyeonjibong, Ganbaeksan, Sobaeksan, Bukpotaesan, Nampotaesan and Baeksabong, which overlook from the Korean peninsula to Northern Manchuria.
The spectacular sight of the ancient lake, Chunji, surrounded by peaks over 2,500m stretching away like a wall, and made up of a combination of snow, rain and underground water, takes breath away from all who climb the mountain. In addition, rocky landscapes, complimented with waterfalls of various sizes hidden in the valley, give the sacred mountain a uniquely mysterious flavor. Including Samji Lake, which was formed as lava blocked water eons ago, the ¡°divine¡± mountain has some tens other lakes within its range.
