A U.S. therapeutic cloning advocacy group has selected South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk as the winner of its first achievement award.
The Florida-based Genetics Policy Institute announced on Wednesday that its first Global Achievement Award would go to Dr. Hwang in recognition of his recent medical breakthroughs. Dr. Hwang will receive the honor on June 11 on the sidelines of the Stem Cell Policy and Advocacy Summit in Houston.
The organization said it made the Global Achievement Award this year to distinguish a scientist who made the greatest contribution in the field of stem cell research and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Hwang's research team at Seoul National University made headlines last month by creating the world's first embryonic stem cells that genetically match injured or sick patients, a major step in the quest to grow patients' own replacement tissue to treat terminal illnesses.
